Amokachi: The Two Goals Folded Into Another Man's Hat-Trick

Case 013's Group D ledger records three different scorers for Nigeria's 3-0 win over Bulgaria at the Cotton Bowl on 21 June 1994: Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55'. For thirty years that match has been retold as "a Yekini hat-trick"; this archive has already corrected it. This file opens the account of the second of those three names: he scored 2 of Nigeria's six group goals — the highest individual tally in the squad — and the peak of his ledger, 84, sits not at the World Cup but in the club season before it.

Page one of the file

Daniel Amokachi, born 1972, a Nigerian centre-forward, retired in 2002. BallFact has filed 6 seasons of his career: two at Club Brugge (Belgium), one at Everton (England), two at Beşiktaş (Turkey) — plus a 1994 national-team row (the World Cup).

He is not a man this archive discovered first — he is a man from a match this archive first got wrong. While re-auditing Group D for Case 013, a "Yekini hat-trick" that had been retold for thirty years came apart into three names: Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55'. This file opens the account of the second of them. He scored 2 of Nigeria's 6 group goals — the highest individual tally in the squad (43' vs Bulgaria, 90' vs Greece) — while the peak our ledger gives him, 84, sits not at the World Cup but in the club season before it: finishing 88, off-the-ball 90 unmoved across six seasons, durability down to 48 in the last row.

PROLOGUE · A file with no blank years

This file was opened on 2026-10-05. The most recently stamped thing in the same batch is CASE 014 (2026-10-08) — one audits a claim other people left behind, this one records the numbers one man left behind, and only one thing separates the two pages: the case had an opponent; the file has only a book. 6 rows × 44 columns (264 cells), calendar years 1991—1999, with no year left blank: 6 rows cover the whole stretch cell by cell.

Start with the strangest fact in the account: The first fall in this ledger is booked to a man of 21. The durability column reads 82 → 82 → 82 → 74 → 76 → 48: three rows unmoved, then a concession of 8 points, then 2 back, then 48 at the bottom. And in that same conceding row, 5 columns (BIG, CMP, STB, VIS, WTW) print their lowest figure in the file — all of them inside the Will and Mental groups. What went first was not the foot and not the leg; it was the 5 cells that describe how he thinks and holds up.

The file writes its top figure only once: 92 (goal hunger, HGRL@1993/94), a single cell out of 264. The runner-up, 90, appears 8 times, 6 of them in the off-the-ball column that never moved across six rows (90) — that is the ruler, not the record. Of 44 columns, 6 have a unique maximum, claimed over 2 rows (1993/94 alone takes 5). The first fall in this ledger is booked to a man of 21.

THE LEDGER

Year-by-year attribute matrix · 1991/92—1998/99

★ = peak season. This matrix is editorial derivation (L3): anchored on audited public results and this archive's own match ledger, solved from no game database. Heat shading only encodes absolute level (scale 60–99); the outlined cell is the single ≥92 one. The 1994 row is a national-team year (World Cup), filed on its own per our convention. Per-season appearances, goals and standings are not held here, so the matrix omits and the prose never cites them. That "Off the ball = 90" is identical in all six rows is machine-checked against the database; if it fails, this page is not allowed to exist.

How to read this table? Not from the right-hand column. Start with "Off the ball" (OFF): 90, 90, 90, 90, 90, 90 — identical across six rows. In our ledger this man's movement, from 18 to 26, never moved. Then two more columns: "Finishing" runs 86 → 88 → 84 → 80 → 82 → 76, its top a year before the World Cup; "Durability" collapses to 48 in the final row, 28 points below the one before. One ledger, two sentences: his nose never declined — what declined was the leg that used to reach the place his nose had chosen.

Shading = absolute level (dark at 60, brightest at 99)Outlined cells = the table's top value (≥ 92; 1: HGRL@1993/94)
92
Goal hunger (HGRL) · the one figure this ledger wrote only once

Out of 44 × 6 = 264 cells, 92 appears exactly 1 time (HGRL@1993/94). The runner-up 90 appears 8 times: 6 of them in the off-the-ball column, identical across all 6 rows (90); the remaining 2 are goal hunger again (HGRL@1991/92, HGRL@1994). The one "priciest cell" that survives inspection sits 2 points and one constant column above its nearest rival.

That cell is written at Brugge, aged 21. On the World Cup row goal hunger reads 90 (−2); in the final row, 86. The match ledger keeps him 2 goals and the minutes 43' and 90'; our ledger keeps him one cell of 92 that was never copied. The first fall in this ledger is booked to a man of 21.

HOW TO CHECK IT To separate a record from a ruler yourself: sort the 44 columns by how many distinct values they hold across 6 rows. 25 of them hold exactly one (off-the-ball 90 among them); those set the background but say nothing about which year was better. Then take the maximum among the columns that actually move: 92 lands once, in HGRL@1993/94. Scan the same way for minima and the 1994/95 row explains itself: 5 columns print their file-low there.

Six rows that never move are a ruler; the one that moves once is the record.

83 → 84 → 82 → 81 → 82 → 79: every figure pulled live from the stored per-season OVR (never hand-typed). The only row our ledger marks as peak is 1993/94 (84) — a club season, a year before that World Cup. The Fallen Stars files record cliffs, Milla's an ascent, N'Kono's a plateau; this one records a head start: the year our ledger calls his best is the year the world had not yet started watching.

Finishing travels 88 → 76 (−12); durability travels 82 → 48 (−34) — in the same ledger the body loses roughly twice what the foot does. The one column that never moved is off-the-ball (90, six identical rows).

The figure on the right was computed with this archive's own position-weighting formula (self-check first: it returns 79 for the last row against our stored 79), and it comes out 3.2 above what was booked — indeed above 82, the overall of "the last row that still says he is quick". This page does not adopt it. Three reasons, recorded in the method box: the arc is L3 editorial derivation, not a measurement solved from any engine; transplanting four columns from the peak row into 1998/99 produces not a season but a season that never happened; and for 1998/99 this archive holds nothing at all — no Beşiktaş match ledger, no appearances, no data beyond 2002 as the year our file gives for his retirement. We know his durability cell reads 48; we do not know whether he played that season.

Refusing to answer is also a verdict. Two more refusals live in this book: the 25 constant columns are not written as "years frozen in place" (that is our convention, not his career); and the 3 stamps in the mark column (1991/92=peak, 1993/94=peak, 1998/99=valley) are not arranged into a finish line — this archive stamps numbers, it does not thread 6 rows into a descent on the reader's behalf.

The first fall in this ledger is booked to a man of 21. The sentence cancels two ready-made stories at once. You cannot write "he fell apart after the World Cup" — 1996/97 takes durability back up to 76 and the overall sits only 2 under the peak. Nor can you write "he held on to the very last season" — the final row concedes 28 points in one step and 5 columns print their file-low in the same cell. The ledger supplies cells, not causes; this page declines to supply the rest.

A downhill you can compute is still not a downhill we may sign.

SEASON CARDS

Six rows, six testimonies

1991/9218ST

Club Brugge, Belgian first division — the first row of our ledger: overall 83, finishing 86. The first thing the file records about an 18-year-old is that he already knew where to stand (off-the-ball 90, unmoved for six seasons).

1993/9421ST

★ Peak · Club Brugge. Overall 84 is the unique high of six rows and finishing 88 its own column's top; but the priciest cell in the table is not the foot — it is goal hunger, HGRL 92. Our ledger puts his best year a season before the World Cup.

199421NGA

★ National-team year · the 1994 World Cup. Case 013's ledger holds two of his goals: 43' vs Bulgaria and 90' vs Greece — 2 of Nigeria's 6 group goals, the squad's highest. Our ledger gives this row 82, 2 below the Brugge peak.

1994/9521ST

Everton, Premier League. Overall 81: durability 74 (the row above still 82), sprint speed 81 (previously 83) — the physical group begins refunding the ledger.

1996/9723ST

Beşiktaş, Turkish Süper Lig. Overall 82, only 2 below the peak; clutch 85 and goal hunger 89 still hold the high ground — the last row in which the ledger says "he is still quick".

1998/9926ST

Beşiktaş, the final row. Overall 79; durability 48 is the lowest cell in the table, 28 points down on the season before, with stamina at 70 that same year. At 26 the body left the contract before the foot did — no further rows follow.

Marks beyond the ledger

1991/92

Club Brugge, Belgian first division — the six-season ledger opens here: overall 83, off-the-ball already 90. (BallFact player_seasons)

1993/94

The unique peak season in our file: overall 84, finishing 88; the priciest single cell of the whole table is goal hunger HGRL 92. The ledger puts his summit a year before the World Cup. (BallFact player_attributes)

1994.06.21

Cotton Bowl, Dallas: Nigeria 3-0 Bulgaria (attendance 44,132). Our ledger lists the goals one by one — Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55': three different men, not one hat-trick. His came on 43'. (Case 013 · L1)

1994.06.30

Foxborough: Greece 0-2 Nigeria (attendance 53,001) — Finidi 45', Amokachi 90'. He finished the group stage with 2 goals, the machine-derived squad high; Nigeria's 6 goals were split among 5 names. (Case 006/013 ledger · L1)

1994/95

Everton, Premier League. Durability steps down to 74 from the 82 band — the first refund in the ledger. (BallFact player_seasons)

1996/97—1998/99

Two seasons at Beşiktaş: overall 82 → 79, with the final row's durability at 48 (table low, a 28-point fall in one season). Retired 2002; the ledger records no further row. (BallFact player_seasons)

ARCHIVIST'S NOTE

Why file a man the story misattributed

Bong Weng, the Archivist BONG WENG Archivist

This ledger has recorded four shapes so far: the cliffs of the Fallen Stars, Milla's ascent, Higuita's long slope, N'Kono's unmoved plank. Amokachi is a fifth — a head start. The only peak in six rows is 1993/94, at Brugge; the year the world saw him gets 82 from our file. The easiest mistake in writing about players is to treat the famous year as the best one. Fame never consults the ledger.

About that match — Case 013 dissected the mechanism: a pleasing shape outranked the team list. "Hat-trick" fits any headline; "three different men" fits none; so the goal on 43' lost its author. This file asks nothing on his behalf, it only reads back what the ledger already says: Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55' — three names, three men. One honest note stands: the attribute arc here is L3 editorial derivation. What holds is what the script confirms cell by cell — the unique 1993/94 peak, the finishing summit in the same season, off-the-ball 90 identical across six rows, and the 48 durability of the last — plus the two minutes living in a published ledger.

Only at this point does the 1994/95 cell deserve its own line. The first fall in this ledger is booked to a man of 21. That row files him at 21 — the same age as the national-team row above it — and the ledger does not treat it as a rookie's season: in that cell 5 columns print their file-low (BIG, CMP, STB, VIS, WTW — all of them inside the Will and Mental groups), while durability (82 → 74) is only the opening step; 1996/97 wins back 2 points and the last row bottoms out at 48. The first collapse in a file is usually the cell where the man himself has not noticed yet.

The case-file chain: three authors of one match

Case 013 tries "did Argentina fall apart when Maradona left?"; the three scorers of that Bulgaria match each hold a line in its ledger. This file keeps the 43' author; File #P00027 (Amuneke) keeps the 55' author; Yekini has no file in this archive, so his name holds no ledger — that is itself a record. The 1994 cluster meets at the "America 1994" focus page.

Note: club/league assignments and per-season attributes come from the BallFact database (attributes L3, editorial derivation); the two 1994 goals, their minutes, the scores and attendances are taken from the published Case 013 and its public CSV ledger, and every figure of that origin on this page is counted out of that file by this script, not typed. Per-season appearances, goals and standings are not filed and are not asserted; club honours, national-team caps and similar claims absent from BallFact-audited cases are neither used nor cited.

A hat-trick is a shape; the ledger is three names.

METHOD

Data basis and confidence grading

L1 · HighThe published Case 013 Group D ledger (FIFA group table and match reports): Nigeria 3-0 Bulgaria (21 June 1994, Cotton Bowl, attendance 44,132) scored by Yekini 21', Amokachi 43', Amuneke 55'; Greece 0-2 Nigeria (30 June 1994, Foxborough, attendance 53,001) by Finidi 45', Amokachi 90'; Argentina 2-1 Nigeria with Nigeria's goal credited to Siasia 8'; final table Nigeria on 6 points, 6 for, 2 against.
L1 · High (recomputed here)Derived by machine from that ledger, with no figure typed into this script: Nigeria's 6 group goals are credited to 5 different names; Amokachi holds 2, the unique squad high; the three goals vs Bulgaria come from three different men, so "the Yekini hat-trick" does not survive our grading (the correction itself is signed in Case 013, Act V).
L2 · MediumPer-season club/league assignments from our player_seasons (Club Brugge/Belgium, Everton/England, Beşiktaş/Turkey; the 1994 row is a national-team year). The apps/goals/team_rank columns of those rows are not filed here and nothing is asserted from them.
L3 · Editorial derivationThe 43 attributes and the overall arc are editorial derivation (scale 1–99), solved from no game database. The load-bearing statistics of this page — the unique 84 peak at 1993/94, the finishing summit of 88 in the same season, off-the-ball 90 constant across six rows, 48 as the table's lowest durability, the three-step shape of durability (82 / 82 / 82 / 74 / 76 / 48: concession, recovery, bottom), the 5 file-lows that 1994/95 takes in one cell (all inside the Will and Mental groups), 92 as the sole 1-cell maximum against 90 in 8 cells (6 of them in a constant column), 25 unmoved columns and 6 unique maxima spread over 2 rows — are machine statistics over that L3 arc; each is a throw-condition of this script. The counterfactual (moving DUR/STA/FIN/HGRL from 1993/94 into 1998/99 under our ST weights yields 82.2, 3.2 above the booked 79) is declared and voided in the same breath: booked nowhere, carrying no conclusion.
